2013 HALLOWEEN HORROR MOVIE ROUND UP

Having been universally applauded as the ultimate horror connoisseur, I have forever been branded the official go-to guy whenever anybody wants to know the name of a good horror flick. As would be expected, and with Halloween right around the corner, even the most casual of film buffs are going to be grabbing the popcorn along with the remote and heading to the couch, only to be scared right off of it and onto the floor. Scary times are good times.

Everybody loves a good horror movie, am I right? Well, anybody that we care to know here at the Deadbydawn horror blog page. All horror fans have their personal favs. Those being the movies they will watch over and over again again, all while thrilling in vile delight each time to the fact that these films never get old. Still others are always on the look out for new terrors to experience. It should be noted that since this blog is a repost I, the Gitche Manitou, will always be on the look out for cool new horror flicks. As we have been reposting our blogs here on the new site I have taken to updating them a little when necessary. This shall not be one of those cases because since I posted this original blog I have yet to see one movie that deserves to be added to this list. So yeah, pretty much fuck new movies and go rent yourself one of the many classics listed below.

I figured since Halloween is just ahead that I would make a list of films for anybody to check out in case one were to be looking for something new. New to them I mean. New, old, you name it.... we got you covered. We even took the time to break the list down into sections. Era's. Director's. Genre's. All essential. I even marked particular films as Deadbydawn page favorites, as picked by both myself and Filthy Regan.

There are certainly many films that lots of people have already seen many times. But, one never knows who has seen or not seen what films. Therefore, I listed the well knowns right alongside the more obscure titles. I am sure there is something for every taste on this list and, as comprehensive as it might be, I will have no doubt forgotten some. Still, when it comes to the absolute mandatory viewing in horror, these are some of the films that we here at Deadbydawn  would suggest you all check out before making that couch/floor dive.

***** Do note that in our methods of breaking films down by section, some were obvious crossover potentials. For these films, we have used our own judgement in classifying them*****

I LIKE SUCKING RAT BLOOD FROM TORTILLA CHIPS

Well, this will not strictly be a horror blog as in it's not related to horror films. But it's horror in that it references something far more.... well, horrible. Horrors of the mind. My mind.

Yes, I love horror movies. Always have. But sometimes horror itself can go beyond the screen and find itself thriving in the darkest corners of our own hearts and minds.

In what I have always liked to refer to as "cow goes moo" terms this would be things that literally scare the shit out of us. Everybody has something. Some have lots of somethings. Fears. Phobias. Things that that go bump in the night can sometimes make us go number two in our shorts.

My filthy goddess did a previous blog that explained what frightens her. We got to talking about it all and I decided to reach into the deepest corners of my mind and share with all of you some things that absolutely grip me with fear.

Some of these things give me nightmares. Some of it is just stuff that sucks a whole lot. But it all disturbs me on some level and even though Gitche Manitou is a well known demonic presence in the underworld and can be found busting out of tumors to wreak his own horror on the world, you will not find me anywhere near any of this stuff because.... yes, it all truly frightens me.

I don't scare easily. But these ten things make me squirm in my seat and shiver with terror.

1) Nickelback.

There is lots of music that sucks. But this band is truly evil incarnate. They write the most juvenile lyrics that I have ever heard and the only thing that frightens me more than their shitty music is the fact that they are so popular.

They are truly the devil.... that is, if the devil really sucked ass.

2) Cheap beer.

Before I became a powerful demon that wanted to destroy the world I used to be quite a party animal and would frequent all the keg parties and assorted fun happenings.

When it comes to alcohol intake youth is not discriminating. But nowadays I need to drink quality brew or I cannot be in full capacity of my evil functions.

So, I have become quite the beer snob and am known to break out in hives when in close proximity to anything that would cost less than ten bucks for a six pack in a liquor store. Cheap beer truly frightens me.... oh yeah, and it curdles my stomach and gives me the runs too.

3) Port-a-potties.

Speaking of having the runs.... I have been known to curb my food intake when the relieving facilities might be something that looks like this.

I hate everything about bathrooms. I try to spend as little time as possible in them. If I am in my own, I might catch up on a little reading. But nothing is as horrific as being in a plastic dome that could easily upheave and standing enclosed smelling the shit of about 150 people. This is seriously one of my worst nightmares.

I will admit that I do subscribe to that whole "when you gotta go ya gotta go" theory just as much as anybody else.

But if the choice is one of these shit houses on wheels or shit in a bush.... I guess I'm going to exercise my love and oneness with nature.

The only thing that scares me more than a port-a-potty is the threat or thought of having explosive diarrhea in a moving vehicle. Well, unless I'm in the passenger seat. That might be fun.

Besides, who the fuck wants to be taking a shit and have this happen?

4) Projectile vomiting.

While we're on the subject of bodily fluids, this just scares me to death. I remember being at a concert once and I saw a girl come out of the pit and stand right in front of this guy and then do that thing that Filthy Regan does when she gets irritated by clergical presence so badly. All I kept thinking about was how much it must have sucked to be that guy. But projectile vomiting is just evil and nobody within pea shot is safe.

Something I will say about vomiting. It's a natural thing. We all have done it at some point for whatever reason. When it's our own it's okay. When it's not.... uhh.... it's not.

5) Scooby Doo feet.

I am not really big on feet anyway. Just always found them gross. I am learning to not hate so much on them and have become quite fond of my filthy goddesses feet. But I have long had a terrifying fear of women who have what I like to call "Scooby Doo feet."

You know what I mean. They're big and crusty and got little gobs of hair on the toes. They are fucking sick, man. Oh, and they smell pretty bad too. These are always the girls who like to stick a scrappy toe in your face and say something along the lines of "Baby needs love."

Well.... ummm.... baby needs a wash and a pedicure... stat.

6) Toe/fingernail violence.

Okay, this will probably get me laughed off the blog planet here. But, I have long been disturbed by the site of violence towards fingernails or toe nails. I'm not sure why. Maybe it stems from my whole thing with feet. Although, you would think since I loathe feet so much I would want to see them violated or killed, right? Yeah, me too.

Regardless of why, I can watch people ripping out and chowing down on gobs of intestines. I can watch brains being blown out all over the place. Blood can ooze, gush, spray, splatter.... you name it.

I have even seen videos of people eating poo. I don't exactly dig on the brown love. But I tell you this...  I can watch the gooey brownie eating bonanza before I can watch somebody having their nails torn off. Not sure why. It just is that way.

7) Ulli Lommel.

Seriously, this guy's name just sends me into a panic. In the 80's he directed a few really cool horror movies. The Boogeyman. The Devonsville Terror. Olivia. All three are cheesy but very cool. But for the last twenty years he has made like 50 low budget horror films that stink worse than week old, or even new,  horse droppings. To hell with b-movies. This guy makes Z-movies and for film fans everywhere, I offer you this word of advice.... if you ever see his name on a movie please throw it down immediately and run away as fast as possible.

8) Susan Boyle.

While we're on the subject of people... will you just look at this woman? Okay, no don't. But, listen to her..... okay, no don't. Seriously... I don't want to look at her.... I don't want to listen to her. Just the mention of her name gives me a soft on.

9) The Joy Luck Club.

Probably one of the biggest head scratching "WTF?" moments that I have ever had was when my ex-girlfriend said to me "Honey, we should watch The Joy Luck Club. I really think you would like this movie." (same girl that hated Clerks, so yeah, fuck her twice with a beer bottle slice)

Somebody who claims to love me and swap spit and body fluids with me and yet thinks that I would enjoy sitting through a near 3 hour movie about 80 year old Asian women playing mah-jong is just clearly wrong on too many levels to mention.

I still wake up in a cold sweat from nightmares about this. Usually they involve me being stuck at the table playing mah jong and these women babbling at me in Asian and staring me down as to why I don't answer them. But sometimes I dream about being trapped in this relationship with a complete moron who might have fallen down and hit her head and yet still wants to spend quality time with me. Truly nightmarish indeed.

10) Dick violence.

I actually already did an entire blog about this. But it's the grand daddy of all fears. The king of things that disturb and upset me. The idea of anything happening to my junk that is less than a cuddle.

I am certain that any man agress with me here. Dick violence is something that one doesn't even like to think about. Not even a little bit. Seriously.... ewww. Make it stop.

I WAS IN LOVE WITH AN ELEVEN YEAR OLD BURN VICTIM

In 1977,when I was ten years old, I had a mad crush on Brooke Shields.

I remember first seeing her in a magazine and falling completely into the ten year old boy version of love with this baby goddess.

In 1978 she would rise to supermodel and movie stardom and thus have her face everywhere thanks to her role in the controversial film Pretty Baby.

Like many other little boys in that time period, I got my first raging case of doggie lust from that Farrah Fawcett poster.

But, Brooke Shields was different. She was my age. Actually one year older than me. Yep, she was special and so, it was official. I was in love. I used to drool over every magazine I would see with a picture of her in it, and when I was eleven years old a horror movie would come to my local theater that loudly advertised that it was "starring Brooke Shields."

Being the spoiled little child that I was, I begged my dad to take me to see this movie so I could oogle at the love of my life, and you just believe that he took me and I did just that. Well, for a few minutes at least.

The movie was called Alice sweet Alice.

It was actually filmed and released under its original title, Communion, in 1976 when Shields was herself only eleven years old.

After Pretty Baby become a monster hit and her face was plastered all over every magazine in the world the studio dusted the film off and re-released it as Alice sweet Alice and made overuse of a brand spanking new ad campaign that highlighted the appearence of the budding young actress, model and then girl of my dreams.

Since I was only eleven years old I had not yet begun to understand the deceiving methods in which films would sometimes advertise themselves to capitalize on a hot actor or actress. So certainly you can imagine my surprise and shock when I raced into my chair filled with glee and ready to gaze at my honeypot of movie screen adoration, only to be lost and confused minutes later as the so called "starring Brooke Shields" role came and went within a fluttering of my eyes.

In fact, Brooke Shields wasn't starring in anything. In reality this film was to be her first screen appearence and to amount to roughly 5-7 minutes of actual screen time. She smiles and eats cookies. She does a lot of whining and crying, and has her sister scare her and threaten her. Then she is strangled and dragged across the floor and tossed into a cabinet, where she is set on fire and burned to death. The End. For me and Brooke Shields at least.

Yep, that was it. My sole reason for seeing this film would be set aflame within the first ten minutes and I would be left to watch a Shields-less slasher movie about a crazy girl who may or may not have killed her sister and is now, maybe, running around stabbing people. But, as luck would have it, I have always been a horror fan and I happened to love slasher movies even back then. They were some of my favorites. So despite my whole purpose of interest in this film being the presence of Brooke Shields, she did whine an awful lot and I truthfully wasn't so glum when she was set on fire.

The movie would also be released yet again in 1981 under the title of Holy Terror, yet for many years it would remain somewhat rather elusive on video and dvd. I did manage to see it again in the late 80's thanks to a very cool video store. But, here it is all these years later and I have finally managed to track down an un-cut version on dvd and was delighted to be afforded the luxury of re-visiting this spooky little gem from my youth.

Often times movies that we tend to remember enjoying from our youth can be somewhat disappointing upon current viewings. This is luckily not the case with this nifty little shocker of a film that turns out to be quite a rollicking experience for any film fan. Religion, youthful angst, and a tense and spooky atmosphere are all blended together quite well by first time director Alfred Sole, who would later go on to make the infamous Tanya's Island.

That would be the movie where Vanity gets it on with a gorilla.

After the young Brooke Shields is burned to death in the opening moments, her troubled sister Alice is suspected to be the murderer.

Alice likes to hang out in the basement of her building and wear a creepy looking mask and a yellow slicker, both articles of clothing that coincidentally the killer will be seen wearing.

She seems to be building a sort of religious shrine that has candles and her sisters doll.... oh yeah, and a jar of cockroaches.

Pretty soon more people start dying and Alice is thought to be the culprit.

The killer is actually revealed about two thirds of the way through the film, which is an unusual method of suspense, but it all works quite wonderfully in my opinion.

One thing that I always remembered from this movie, even all these years later, was the landlord.

A morbidly obese and horridly creepy cat loving guy named Mr. Alphonso who always has appeared to have pissed his pants each time he is shown. He constantly tries to fondle young Alice and becomes a major source of the creepy here. Believe me, this guy would creep anybody out and then some.

Something else that I always remembered about this movie was the violence. Though not exactly graphic by todays standards the stabbings in this movie are particularly brutal. Knives are shown being plunged up to their hilts into stomachs, shoulders, legs, feet and necks.

There is much slasher fun to be had, and after all this extreme knifeplay, I found myself completely over my former crush little Miss Shields.

I truly enjoyed everything about this movie, both then and now. It's dark. It's unsettling at times. The story is well done. The acting is effective. It's a very underrated and sadly overlooked gem of a film. The whole thing holds up really well all these years later and I highly suggest that any horror fan, particularly of the slasher variation, track it down and give it a look. It still seems to be relatively unknown. Copies for sale are a bit pricey on various retail outlets but they do have it for rent over at shitflix.

Another interesting tidbit is that I have recently heard through the horror movie grapevine that a remake of this film is planned. I do so loathe these things and this one in particular sort of brings me up a bile taste. Still, maybe if this is going to be the latest classic to receive the royally horrendous unneccesary remake treatment that will focus more attention on the original and make some people seek the original out. As for me, I have my digital copy of the original film set in regular rotation and this horror loving manboy is set for life.
